Neurodiversity – Gender Diversity; a Discussion
Agenda
I am a Registered Adult Nurse and Registered Children’s Nurse with 30 years experience in healthcare. A large part of my NHS career was spent as a specialist paediatric pain nurse at a large teaching hospital. I have also had NHS experience in adult and paediatric hospital and community settings. Currently I work in the NHS as a Specialist nurse for the Neurodevelopmental pathway. I have a neurodiverse daughter aged 16 diagnosed with ADHD and autism, my personal experience has given me huge admiration for all parents of neurodiverse children. Day to day can often be exhausting but huge rewards on the good days make it all worthwhile.
I am also an advocate for the trans community and have devoted the last seven years to gaining knowledge and awareness of gender incongruence and its treatment. I am a member of BAGIS (British Association of Gender Identity Specialists) and WPATH (World Professional Association of Gender Identity Specialists).
I have worked within Health and Social care for 33 years, 29 years with the Scottish Health and Social care partnership, as a registered care coordinator. Since 2020, I have worked within the Health and Justice System. I currently work within a team of psychiatrists in HMP Hewell, a male remand prison, where I provide mental health care.
I have social care qualifications as a supervisor in a care setting and additional qualifications and experience in transactional analysis, which is a branch of psychology that specifically looks at the way we interact with others.
For 7 years I ran a transgender safeguarding service in Birmingham, and I also facilitate a parents' support group and an adult trans support group.
My partner and I have delivered lectures to Birmingham University on transgender awareness and access to healthcare. We offer a similar training for GPs and allied health and social service professionals.
As a trans female, my life journey has not been easy. Lifelong neurodiversity has added many challenges which I am now beginning to unfold.
